City of Norwich Implements Temporary Fire Service Operational Adjustment to Strengthen Emergency Coverage

The City of Norwich announced today that it has implemented a temporary administrative operational adjustment to emergency fire service coverage within the Yantic service area. This action follows the City’s review of ongoing operational and administrative concerns involving service delivery, unified command coordination, and adherence to established safety and response standards.

The City emphasizes that this decision was made solely to protect public safety and ensure reliable emergency response services for residents and visitors. Extensive contingency planning was completed prior to implementation to guarantee uninterrupted emergency coverage.

Effective immediately, emergency response coverage for the affected area has been reassigned through the Norwich Fire Department Unified Command Structure under the direction of the Fire Chief. The revised deployment model not only maintains service continuity but increases the overall standard of coverage through additional staffing resources, enhanced apparatus availability, and strengthened response coordination.

“The safety of our community will always be our highest priority,” City officials stated. “While administrative adjustments are sometimes necessary, our focus remains on providing dependable, professional emergency services. We are optimistic that constructive dialogue and collaboration will allow this matter to be resolved, and we view this operational change as a temporary step toward achieving stronger, more sustainable emergency service delivery.”

The City continues to work with regional partners and municipal resources to ensure response benchmarks, turnout times, and operational readiness remain fully supported throughout this transition.

Residents should be assured that emergency services remain fully operational. There is no change in how emergency assistance is requested, and individuals should continue to dial 911 during emergencies.

The City of Norwich remains committed to maintaining a sustainable, accountable, and high-performing fire service system that serves all neighborhoods equitably while supporting long-term volunteer and municipal fire service sustainability.

Further updates will be provided as operational integration and administrative discussions continue.
